Derived from the Jewish tradition of welcoming the Sabbath (the seventh day of creation) by the lighting of two candles, Seventh is the first of a series of candlesticks inspired by the laws of physics. Due to the angle at which the candles are placed, the wax melts and drips, causing a pendulum effect and providing a more kinetic and interactive candle-lighting experience.
While this interpretation of the Jewish tradition contradicts certain elements of the biblical Sabbath, a day of rest from the week’s labor, it resembles a more progressive approach to the Jewish ritual, through which new generations can create a deeper personal connection to their Jewish heritage.
The following items in the series will include a Menorah and Havdala set incorporating nitinol and bi-metals, utilizing the heat of the candles to produce movement and a similar interactive experience.
Seventh was presented in the Bezalel Academy annual exhibit 2015.
